What's my name...Call me Mary Jane
Posted on 30 January 2016
Ever wondered why we call weed Mary Jane? There are a couple of explanations. One is by influence of the Spanish proper name Maria Juana "Mary Jane" from mariguan (1894). At a certain moment in the Victorian British Empire it was called Mary Jane because those two names were the most common female names at that time and that's how they referred to marijuana. Then Mary Jane was translated into Spanish and it became marijuana which is now one of the most common names.
Regardless, in this new era Mary Jane is making her way onto the main stage in America thanks to legalization taking hold in many more states.
